Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Valentini - 2009

Item # 32650 750 mL

While some people favor Valentini's rarer red Montepulciano, we here think the Trebbiano is the most interesting wine at the Valentini estate. It's dry and full of preserved lemons, minerals, smoke, and thyme. A pleasure to drink anytime and just right with a slight chill. Excellent with spaghetti alla bottarga, which was a favorite match of the late Eduardo Valentini, too.

Staff Pick Notes

Edoardo Valentini was previously the enigmatic producer of these illustrious Trebbiano d'Abruzzos, known for the ancient techniques he employed to craft this distinctive, age worthy wine. Unfortunately the mystery passed with the man in 2006 but the legend lives on through his son Francesco. Working with a clone of Trebbiano that his father believed conveyed the soul of the terroir, this wine is full of stunning clarity and depth that will continue to evolve gracefully. This is certainly an oxidative style of wine, full of lemon curd, dried hay, lemongrass, good phenolic character back by an ever present saline mineral element that really gives this wine its idiosyncratic quality. Trebbiano expressed in this manner is only done so by masters such as Emidio Pepe and now Francesco Valentini, just don't expect much info, he's media-shy.

Glossary

Abruzzi

Situated on the eastern calf of the Italian boot, Abruzzi is one of the most prolific wine-growing regions in Italy. Two-thirds mountains and one-third hills, it boasts highly favorable natural conditions for the cultivation of grapes. Abruzzi is most famous for its beautiful expressions of the red Montepulciano and the white Trebbiano, though many winemakers are now beginning to experiment with other grape varietals as well.
