Staff Pick Notes

So after a long hiatus from Argentina and its Malbec I've plunged back in. On a suggestion from a customer I tried Achaval-Ferrer. I'll admit some hesitation, remembering the hard candies I've spit out from other Malbecs. But fear not, this wine is a staff pick for a reason. After about 20 minutes of breathing this wine's aroma leaps out of the glass. Between its rich purple color and its fresh aroma, one might mistake this wine for a hearty Beaujolais Cru. The palate shows the rewards of a "fruitful" day in the woods... pardon the wordplay. But seriously folks, wild berries both black and red abound in this wine. With almost no spice notes this wine is a celebration of youth, but it's crafted with the wisdom of the old. Pair this with grilled chicken in a berry compote, braised beef in a molé sauce, or pork cheeks and white beans.

As the grape can be quite difficult to cultivate, it has become far less popular over the years, even in its Bordeaux home. Its South American renaissance has ensured, however, that...
