The Altura winery is located on the small island of Giglio west of Tuscany. This is a field blend, made from an array of native grapes including Sangiovese. An impressive, complex red wine with wild aromas of dark fruits and anise with a tangy mineral finish. "Saverio" means "savage." Drink slightly chilled alongside rich, earthy dishes.

Canaiolo

Also called Canaiolo Nero, this black grape is cultivated in Italy, but not as widely as in years past. After the 19th century's phylloxera epidemic, Canaiolo vines proved difficult to graft onto healthy rootstock, so it was grown much less. Today there are still pockets of Canaiolo vineyards throughout Tuscany, and it is an allowed ingredient in Chianti - in fact, in the 18th century it was even more crucial to the character of that beloved blend than Sangiovese.

Sangiovese

Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends.
