Brunello di Montalcino, Caprili - 2018

Item # 29676 750 mL

Caprili is a Brunello estate in the southwestern sector of the Montalcino appellation near the hamlet of Tavernelle. They are considered one of the old guard of Montalcino producers as they were established in 1965. The winery is run by the youthful and dynamic, Giacomo Bartolommei, who has ratcheted up the quality at this historic estate. Stylistically, the wines are in the traditional camp of Montalcino, approachable without being rustic. Classic Tuscan aromas and flavors, dusty dried cherries, with a kiss of leather and spice and an underpinning of minerality.

Staff Pick Notes

Lovers of Tuscan wines know that Brunello di Montalcino is built to last. At ten years young, this lovely Caprili Brunello is just starting to demonstrate its capabilities. Decanted for about an hour, the tannins loosened up quite nicely, much like muscles after a good stretch. The wine shows richness and structure, but also youthful fruit, licorice, savory herbs and the leathery note characteristic to Sangiovese. Like a crushed velvet robe, the wine enshrouds the palate with flavors. One of my favorite things about the wine is its pairing versatility. Try it with Italian classics such as sausage pasta, but don't rule out turkey and cranberry sauce. Red meat or game are also natural matches. Enjoy!

Glossary

Brunello

A clone of the great Sangiovese grape, used to make the famed Brunello di Montalcino red wines of Tuscany. Wines made of this particular clone are among the most complex and rich expressions of the pure grape variety, yielding robust, voluptuous wines with great depth and aging potential. Typical notes include leather, earth, plums, and spices. Potentially the most tannic and ageworthy of the Sangiovese-based wines.

Tuscany

When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is common to most great Tuscan reds (Vernaccia is the only white wine made here). Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh fruit and herbs, while Chianti Classico Riserva can be dark and brooding. The term “Super Tuscans”...
