Staff Pick Notes

Nestled in-between chestnut and oak trees lies the project winery headed by the father and son team of Fernando and Fabio Algueira, some of Ribeira Sacra's superstars. Using only indigenous varietals that are planted on extremely steep inclines (much like the Mosel or Côte-Rôtie), everything is done by hand. Under the "spiritual" consultation by the famous Raúl Pérez, Algueira decided to move into a biodynamic route while exercising spontaneous fermentation to express fruit and texture in their wines. This Mencía expresses the rustic and earthier qualities of the grape with nice concentration and regal structure. Flavors of black licorice, pomegranate, black cherry, smoked meat, and graphite are present with tannins that ease their grip over time, showing a wine with polish and balance.

Vines must struggle for nutrients here, and this gives concentration to the fruit. The red wines of Ribeira Sacra are...
