Mtsvane, Pheasant's Tears, Tibaani - 2020

750 mL
Item # 29247

This cool Mtsvane comes from 70-year-old vines, which is unusual for any former Soviet country, as most indigenous varieties were torn out in favor of more productive vines. From a happily-spared one hectare planting on volcanic soils, this white wine shows dried thyme and chrysanthemum petals, over a delicately-textured palate. Flavors of dried apricots and blossoms and assam tea tannins on the finish. Try with grilled or baked fish, cool soups, and pork.

Production Methods

Natural

Wine made from organically or biodynamically grown grapes with minimal intervention avoiding the use of chemicals, additives and technology.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

Are you one of those lucky few who have been initiated into the pleasures of traditional Georgian amber wine? Most likely that introduction came via the Rkatsiteli grape--but why stay put when Georgia (as might be expected of a vineyard so close to Noah's first near Ararat) boasts the greatest biodiversity of grape varieties per hectare in the world? This Mtsvane is a compelling study vis-à-vis the Rkatsiteli, showing slightly less extraction from the skins and more spicy, beguiling aromatics. Those who proclaim that skin-contact, qvevri-raised amber wines suffer from a distressing sameness ought heed the words of John Wurdeman, the folk-song collector, painter, and Georgian cultural ambassador behind Pheasant's Tears: if they all taste the same to you, it's because you don't drink enough of them.
