Mezcal Vago Elote by Hijos de Aquilino Garcia Lopez

Item # 29165 750 mL

A very rare and unique mezcal, even by mezcal standards, and the first of its kind to make it across the border. To produce this unforgettable spirit, the sons of Aquilino Garcia Lopez infuse this espadin mezcal with roasted sweet corn for a week and then distill it for a third time. The result is intoxicating, with notes of rich, smoky sweet corn, tropical fruits, vanilla, earth, and smoke. This is what great mezcal is all about. Limited. Please note: This has a redesigned label which is different than the current website image.

Staff Pick Notes

I worked for a few years in a tiny Brooklyn trattoria that specialized in Venetian foods. The chef made a seasonal tortelli, and every late summer and fall she would stuff the little tender pastas with sweet corn puree and mascarpone cheese and dress them with brown butter and fried sage leaf. You'd take a bite and suddenly feel content with the collective achievements of all of humanity. In Vago Elote, mezcalero Aquilino Garcia Lopez uses roasted sweet corn between the second and third distillation. Capping off the aromas of tropical fruits, wild mint and gentle smoke is the hedonistic granddaddy of holy maize essence. Whether its Venice or Oaxaca, experiences like these make you wonder what summit of human ingenuity, art and culture is left to climb.
