You hear people talk about "punk rock" wines sometimes, usually something aggressively funky and natural, iconoclastic. Well, as interesting as those might be, none of them hold a candle to Hank Beckmeyer, who was the honest to god drummer for the art punk band Half Japanese, touring Europe, when he met his wife and co-vigneron Caroline Hoel, dropped out, and ended up working around farms and vineyards to stay afloat. The pair take inspiration for non-interventionist farming from philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka's "do-nothing" methods (Hank also credits Frank Zappa and John Cage as winemaking influences). The wines all have tremendous freshness and vitality, bottled with little to no SO2. When they work with Syrah, they bring out all of those wonderful notes of violet candies, smoked meat, and ripe fruit.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce.
