Staff Pick Notes

Ahhh, Grüner Veltliner. You are always there when I need you. You manage to pair with ingredients difficult (asparagus and artichoke) and easy (salad and fish). In the summer, you quench my thirst with your minerality and acidity. In the winter, you warm my heart with your white pepper and apple blossom. You are also, generally, ridiculously affordable. You may just be my perfect match. Meinklang’s Grüner is a prime example of all of these things. It somehow manages to be simultaneously apple-y, pepper-y and also slightly vegetal--an unexpectedly wonderful combination. The zippy acidity positively cries out for light fare. Additionally, it would be quite difficult to find another wine at this price point with this amount of complexity. It’s hard to imagine an occasion where this wouldn’t be a great selection.

Austria

Austrian wine is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ever since the late 1980s, Austrian winemaking has taken a much more rigorous approach to quality control, and returned to its roots in organic viticulture.Deservedly famous for its white wines (Grüner Veltliners especially), Austria makes a number of delicious red wines as well. The most widely grown red grape in Austria is Zweigelt (a.k.a. Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
