Matchbook "Dunnigan Hills" Cabernet Sauvignon - 2022

750 mL
Item # 25868

Rich yet earthy, with notes of blackberries, leather, and herbs, this weighty Cab brings a lot of complexity to the table. A balancing note of cedar shavings indicates that this wine spent some time in oak. Tannins are softened, with just enough structure to demand a peppered steak alongside. A splash of Syrah adds a sprinkle of white pepper on the nose and palate. The Cabernet Sauvignon was selected from Lake County and the Russian River Valley. The Syrah is from the Russian River Valley and Dunnigan Hills. After fermentation the wine was aged 19 months in a combination of new and neutral French and American oak. Crew Wines was launched in 2005 by the owners of R.H. Phillips Wines. They named this new project "Crew" because they kept most of the same staff.

Staff Pick Notes

This is a great example of how well-made wines from California’s less heralded appellations make some of the best domestic values. The Dunnigan Hills rise from the plains of Yolo County, halfway between the Napa’s Vaca mountains and Sacramento. The well-draining slopes have been planted to vines for a while, but the grapes were mostly sold to add depth to commodity wines. The Giguiere family are 5th generation farmers in the area who opened this winery in 2005 and now produce wines that demonstrate the potential of this region. Fantastic phenolic ripeness retaining acidity and an emerging sense of terroir support a naturally big and balanced California Cab under $20.

More About This Wine

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...

Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. It is the principal grape of Bordeaux, and as such has rightly earned its place among the greatest and most long-lived wines of the Old World; of course, it is also the most heralded grape of California, positioning it at the forefront of the New World wine scene as well. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
