Primitivo Riserva, Fatalone - 2020

Item # 25581 750 mL

This Riserva Primitivo is made by the Pasquale Petrera winery and comes from the village of Gioia del Colle. The high elevation of the vineyards and limestone soils contribute to the wine's elegance that is somewhat contradictory for a southern Italian Primitivo. Aged 30 months total in a combination of stainless steel, old Slavonian oak, and then bottle. The tannins are well-tamed and wound into a wild, black plum core. One of those rare Primitivos that will age for up to 20 years. A fine partner to pasta with homemade tomato sauce, grilled fatty fishes, beef, game, or aged cheeses, as well as well herbed tapenade.

Staff Pick Notes

Needing an all-purpose, always-stunning, crowd-pleasing, full-bodied Italian red to take you through the colder parts of the year? I can say without hesitation that you, your mother, your grandmother, and quite possibly your dog would all be on board with Fatalone's Primitivo Riserva. This is definitely not the Puglian plonk that so often graces retail wine shelves; this is serious stuff, with little intervention in the vineyard, no filtration, and aging done in large oak casks. I like to compare this wine to the best producers of California Zinfandel (think Turley): full-bodied with lots of depth, dark earthy tones, and supple tannins, but also a balancing lift of sour cherry. Pair with red sauce and a checkered tablecloth, Texas barbecue, dark chocolate, or a fire pit.
