Chinon, "Les Terraces", Lambert - 2020

Item # 24786 750 mL

Vignerons since 1987, Lambert converted their property to organic in the early 2000s and certified organic by Ecocert in 2005, Beatrice and Pascal decided this was not enough. They moved into Biodynamics and, like many of their neighbors in the Loire, follow the dogma of Nicolas Joly. They use plant foliage between rows and add no sulfur to their wines. Les Terraces, 100% Cabernet Franc, displays a wild musky nose, dense fruit, and the terroir of calcareous clay atop the region's famous tuffeau. Serve with a slight chill and drink now.

Staff Pick Notes

This wine took no time to bring me pleasure. It wasn’t reticent or aloof. It didn’t demand that I wait for it to wake up in my glass. I popped the cork and it was there to welcome me, with its crushed, gravelly core, softly textured green and red plummy fruit and dusty minerality. This is good Chinon, typical Chinon, possessed of rusticity, friendliness, and all the bucolic warmth of a sunbaked, soot-caked, craggy-faced farmer who strips off her leather gloves to greet you warmly. Beatrice and Pascal Lambert, whose 14 hectares in Cravant-les-Coteaux have been fully biodynamic since 2005, craft sincere, unadorned, and beautifully expressive wines. No bells and whistles here, folks. Just salt of the earth, honest, delectable wine.

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Cabernet Franc

Relegated to moderate obscurity in modern times, Cabernet Franc is in fact the proud parent of the attention-hogging Cabernet Sauvignon (after an illicit affair with Sauvignon Blanc a hundred-odd years ago). Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends. In fact,...
