Staff Pick Notes

What could be more powerful than Sagrantino? Only Sagrantino from Montefalco! The first written record of this variety is in Umbria in the late 16th century as a communion wine. Historically Sagrantino was used primarily for making sweet passito wines. Since the 1970s however, the wines have been made principally in a dry secco style, with typically bold extraction and complete fermentation. Di Filippo winery owns 30 hectares of vineyards, resting on sun drenched hills in the heart of Umbria. They have a tradition of cultivation which respects nature, as we strongly believe in the need to find a constant balance between man, soil, flora and fauna. They adopt organic cultivation which respects the laws of biodynamic farming. Their Sagrantino is full and persistent, with velvety and strong tannic flavour with aromas of intense red berries.

Responsible for the eponymous Sagrantino di Montefalco as well as being a component of Rosso di Montefalco, Sagrantino has the power and structure of the biggest wines in Italy, yet still shows opulent fruit redolent of mixed wild berries.
