Staff Pick Notes

I love all things Loire: the reds, whites, rosé, sparklings, and sweet. No wine region is as diverse. The only thing you don't readily find is ye olde heavily tannic, fruit-bomb reds. One commonality in this diverse region is that most of the producers are small, family-run operations. So when I found this wine from the unknown (to me) grape, Chasselas, I had to try it. I liked it a lot. Chasselas is exactly what I have come to expect from Loire Valley whites—bright, crisp, and zipping with acidity. It carries all the minerality of a good Sauvignon Blanc, but with less grassy notes. It's also made from 115 year old vines, grown in a single vineyard.

More About This Wine

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Chasselas

A white grape grown all over the world, including Alsace, the Loire, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. The best Chasselas wines, however, are produced in Switzerland, where the grape is called Fendant and is the most widely planted variety in the country. When made well, Chasselas is soft, welcoming and easy to drink.
