Xinomavro "Old Roots," Tatsis - 2016

Item # 18564 1.5

Xinomavro is a native red grape planted in northern Greece that is best-known for it's black skin and luscious acidity. This comes from 80 year old vines and is the factor for adding such great concentration to this noble Greek wine. Aged in old American oak for a year before bottling.

Staff Pick Notes

Since the 90s, Domaine Tatsis has been on the bleeding edge of "natural" winemaking in Greece, eschewing industrial production methods used so often elsewhere in Greece and instead letting the grapes and land speak for themselves. And through their wines, brothers Periklis and Stergios speak loudly. If Xinomavro is indeed the king of Greek red wines, it has found a worthy champion in the Brothers Tatsis. This wine comes from vines older than my long-gone Yiayia and Papou, leading to highly concentrated flavors of red flowers and fruits, gentle acidity, and tannins so firm-yet-smooth they could've been stolen with the rest of Lord Elgin's marbles (send them back, England!). A word of advice: As this wine has minimal sulfur added at bottling, it rewards quick consumption once opened. Yamas!

Glossary

Xynomavro

Pronounced "ksee NO ma vro", this is one of Greece’s most important red varietals. The primary grape of Naoussa, this grape produces wines of extraordinary depth and complexity. Frequently likened to Nebbiolo, these wines are dark and tannic in their youth, and benefit immensely from ageing. Typical aromas are black olive, cooking spices, earth, and black fruit.
