Bucklin "Old Hill Ranch", Ancient Field Blend - 2021

Item # 17517 750 mL

As expected, the old vines gives this a dark and brooding nose: brambly, tarry, and very spicy. Based mostly on Zinfandel but a blend of many local varieties. The ripeness here creates an opulent entry, with lots of depth on the mid-palate and a delightful, creamy old-vine intensity.

Staff Pick Notes

The Bucklin Ancient Field blend is made from an astonishing thirty-plus different varietals including the “unknown spotted grape” (named for the fact that it has no DNA marker, and, well, spots) and Mollard, Persan, and Etraire de la Dui, who only exist in the French Alps aside from Bucklin’s Ancient Block, one of California’s oldest vineyards that was established in 1885. After co-fermentation of this motley cru, this wine sees eighteen months in French oak, twenty five percent new, for a very productive eighteen months. Oodles of luscious, brambly fruit, just the right amount of toasty oak, notes of cocoa, orange zest, that irresistible Old Hill spice, friendly tannins and acidity make this distinctly American melting pot of a wine an absolute joy to drink. Simply put: twelve acres, thirty different grapes, one incredible wine.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is widely thought of as “America’s grape,” but in fact the variety is of Croatian origin, and is genetically extremely similar to Italian Primitivo, which thrives in the warmest parts of southern Italy. Like Primitivo, Zinfandel requires warm but not hot growing conditions, as its skins are relatively thin: this can cause its berries to shrivel into raisins if left on the vine a little too long. Dry and well-drained terroirs are also preferable for Zinfandel, as its bunches are...
