Radio-Coteau Syrah, Las Colinas - 2019

Item # 15653 750 mL

The French expression "Radio Coteau" translates to word of mouth and for the owners of Radio Coteau winery it means a commitment to capturing expressions of the terroir in the bottle. The Las Colinas does just that. Mineral laden, with notes of cured meat, black fruit, and Asian spices, once you try it, you will want to share it too by "word of mouth".

Staff Pick Notes

“The best fertilizer is the farmer’s shadow,” is an old adage meaning there’s no substitute for a farmer’s involvement in cultivating the land. Winegrower Eric Sussman takes this to heart, utilizing organic and biodynamic practices to build the health of the soil and surrounding ecosystem. For his efforts, the estate vineyard and farm was Demeter Certified Biodynamic in 2018. The Las Colinas is indicative of what’s possible for cool-climate Syrah. A blend of Harrison Grade Estate and Dusty Lane grapes, élevage in 500-liter puncheons helps to preserve fruit and spice. Showcasing the classic coastal Syrah interplay between fruit and umami, notes of black plum are layered with tones of cassis and fig. Hints of black olive and soy sauce emerge, adding savory complexity to the fruit. Pleasantly dry tannins echo throughout. Drink or hold.

Radio-Coteau Forestville, Sonoma County, CA Radio-Coteau (ra´de o ko to´ - literally, “broadcasting from the hillside”) is a colloquial expression meaning “word of mouth.” Winegrower Eric Sussman first heard the phrase from a friend while living and working in Burgundy. More than a preference for how you discover these wines, the name reflects a commitment to capturing reflections of soil,...

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
