Staff Pick Notes

Abbazia di Novacella is an Augustinian Abbey dating to the 1140's in the region of Sudtirol in Italy's northeast. And yes, they've been making wine for that long. While the wine they are best known for is their Kerner (a crossing between Riesling and the red Schiava, and a true gem of a bottle), the one that really captures my heart is their Pinot Grigio. Normally, you won't find me recommending Pinot Grigio for any reason under any circumstances, but this one is different. A wine that shows true varietal depth; laser-beam acidity, featherweight body, and a surprisingly long taste of lemon peel and wet rock. No need to pair this wine with food, just open and enjoy well-chilled on its own. It's 5pm in a glass, even if it isn't on the clock. This ain't your grandma's Pinot Grigio!

Trentino-Alto Adige

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is an Italian synonym for the French Pinot Gris variety, but many more people have had Pinot Grigio than a Pinot Gris. At its most basic level, the grape produces varietals that are smooth and easy to drink, and perfect with a huge range of dishes that just beg to be paired with a fresh white wine. There is an entire spectrum of Pinot Gris/Grigio, however, the best of them being subtly aromatic and deeply colored, with formidable structures. Most of Italy's Pinot Grigio is grown in...
