Kalin Cellars Semillon, Livermore Valley - 2001

Item # 14427 750 mL

Sourced from vines that were planted in the 1880s from original Château d'Yquem cuttings, this Sémillon is a fascination from the first sip. Made in a traditional European style, this wine is slightly oxidative, bounded by notes of honey and acacia leaf across a broad lanolin-textured palate. Pair this dry wine with melty, aged cheeses, cured meats, and exotic, sauced poultry and game.

Staff Pick Notes

One of the most fascinating wineries in California, Kalin Cellars produces single-vineyard wines of tremendous depth. Each wine goes through incredibly long fermentation and is only touched by Terry and Frances Leighton. They alone decide when each bottling is ready, and 2000 is their current release. This bottling is from the El Mocho vineyard in Livermore Valley, located 50 miles east of San Francisco. The vines were sourced from Chateau d’Yquem and were planted in the 1880s. Definitely a very funky wine, completely dry and wonderfully rich. Starting with notes of sultanas and apricots, the glass eventually develops flavors of grilled hazelnuts, toffee, and notes of a fine Sherry. A perfect wine for a Szechuan dinner or as the accompaniment to a triple-cream Brie.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
