The magnificent Bandol appellation, known for its powerful reds borders the Mediterranean sea. Half a mile inland on a hillside near a tiny village called Le Castellet, Domaine de la Tour du Bon is quietly making some excellent wines. These wines were made to be aged, for decades ideally, as the wine becomes a different animal with decades of age.

What a total thrill! My first time nosing this in a wine glass drew me ever persistently further into it's charm! The aroma was redolent of ripe black fruit accompanied by subtle herbs de Provence are not just what you smell. On the palate its got loads to gives but make no mistake it also is dry with structure. No overbearing tannin to speak of which makes this rather accessible. Please pair this with grilled fare loaded with proper spice. Oh I don't know..... New York Strip or brisket with heeps of fresh cracked pepper!

Glossary

Mourvèdre

Known as Mataro in California and Monastrell in Spain, Mourvèdre can produce bold, tannic, highly alcoholic red wines. They usually show no shortage of fruit as well, and the best examples keep it all in perfect balance. Rhône-style blends are cropping up all over the world, and one of the classic tried-and-true combinations is "GSM," or Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre. The "M" contributes focus and fleshy character to blends - but Mourvèdre also shines on its own as a varietal wine.

Bandol

Arguably the most significant appellation in Provence, Bandol produces spicy, earthy, rich red wines. These tend to be big and well-structured, relying on the Mourvèdre grape for their power. Vines in Bandol are grown in very meager soils of gravel, clay, and limestone: this, combined with the hot, dry coastal climate, gives these thick-skinned berries exactly what they need in order to thrive.

A Spanish synonym for the dark-skinned Mourvèdre grape.

Provence has some of the best vine-growing territory in the world, with a perfect Mediterranean climate tempered by the cooling effects of the sea.
