Château-Grillet - 2019

Item # 11195 750 mL

Château Grillet is much like a Condrieu, but an appellation unto itself. Perhaps the finest and most sought after Viognier wines in the world because they age so beautifully, similar in spirit to La Romanée or La Tâche. This is not Condrieu. Whispered reverence by sommeliers describing ambrosial apricots, elusive truffles and honey, mingling with Meditterranean clementines, all evolving elegantly, becoming among the few mythic wines in the world.

Staff Pick Notes

Lush. I could bore you with stats on the Ch. Grillet Monopole, vintages, soils, etc., but I'd rather just talk about the pleasures of this wine. Voluptuous. Like Marilyn Monroe, this viognier has curves for days. It is rich, honeyed and mouth filling. Hedonistic. Yellow roses, orange blossom, poached pear, stewed apricot, nougat, white truffles, saffron. Ambrosia. She will age with stunning grace, but it drinks perfectly now. Sometimes its better to shine twice as bright for half as long.

Château Grillet, located in the northern Rhône wine region of France, south of...

Rhône

Prestige in the north, value in the south: that’s the quick version of the Rhône story. Southern village appellations produce a dizzying stylistic range of delicious wines, while the prices for northern “trophy” bottles can be dizzyingly high. If you like smoky, leathery, earthy, macho red wines, however, the wines of the northern Rhône are well worth it. Prestigious northern Rhône appellations include Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and St.-Joseph. In the southern Rhône, look to the village...

Viognier

Some of the most intriguing wines associated with the white Viognier grape contain hardly any Viognier at all: in the Côte Rôtie appellation, wine must be made principally from the red Syrah grape, but up to 20 percent (often far less) can be of white Viognier. The practice of adding Viognier to Syrah began as a way of taming the very ripe, tannic reds of the hot Côte Rôtie ("roasted slope"), but it produced such incredible results that other countries, most notably Australia, have followed...
