Staff Pick Notes

Working with wines in California gave me the chance to try several different Californian Chardonnays. Pronounced oaky notes and a creamy texture were fixed in my mind as a signature of what a Chardonnay from California should taste like. Then I tried this Chardonnay from Chile. It was not as exuberantly oaky or buttery as some classic Californian Chardonnays, but it had enough to compare and enough to challenge the style. Montes Alpha Chardonnay is full-bodied, complex, and creamy It's ready to enjoy now but it will age gracefully if you cellar it. When I came to New York, I had the chance to meet Aurelio Montes, the winemaker. He explained to me that the similarity in style between his Chardonnay and the ones from California is not a coincidence. It is the result of using more modern wine making techniques. I like it!
