Staff Pick Notes

For some people, the holidays are a time to to eat rich food and partake in dark spirits (the liquid kind). If it were up to me, though, I’d opt to drink Laurent-Perrier Brut Rose NV all season. This textured and dry rose champagne, made with 100% Pinot Noir grapes harvested from 10 different Premier Cru plots from the area around Montagne de Reims, is as good as it gets. The esteemed house uses a proprietary maceration technique, perfected over the course of 50 years, to extract an incredible salmon hue before aging the wine for four years in bottle (vs 3 years for Billecart Salmon and 2 years for Ruinart Rose). The result is a champagne with intense aromas of strawberries, Morello cherries, black currants, and raspberries, and a rich, yet balanced palate with enough acidity to hold up to any holiday fare. Joyeuses fêtes!

Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Champagne

These winemakers control every aspect of grape cultivation and vinification, from the vine to the finished bottle, which is...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
