Bunnahabhain 12 Yr. Scotch

Item # 05634 750 mL

One of the great names of Scotch Whisky, distilling on Islay for over 140 years, this stalwart is too often over looked in favor of the other giants of the island. Chalk it up to the fact that anyone who sets up shop on Islay seems to make incredible whisky, but this gem deserves more due and with it multiple spots in your bar starting with this flagship bottling. The more restrained levels of peat and big copper pot stills used here allow for a wider spectrum of flavors in their whiskies and more nuance and balance compared to some of the bigger styles around the way. One of the best buys in all of Scotch.

Staff Pick Notes

One of the classics of Islay, and one of the best values in the entire single malt category in my opinion, Bunnahabhain 12 Year brings forth the best elements of sherry maturation, without the use of chill filtration or added color. Add in the fact that there is an actual age statement present and that it is bottled at a generous 46% abv. We are surely in for a treat! This is an unpeated Single Malt Scotch Whisky, so don’t expect any smoke here, but the effects of Islay are still on full display! There is a brininess on the palate that enhances the chocolate covered cherry note (much like the effect of sea salt on caramel), while the texture is masterfully rich and smooth. The sherry notes are well integrated, without being overpowering. Ultimately, this is a top notch bottling that I always have on hand for a relaxing evening.

Glossary

Scotch

As a synonym for Scottish, some people object to the term “Scotch” – but as far as their whisky goes, the Scottish people are required by law to classify the spirit as “Scotch whisky.”

Scotland

History:Distillation was brought to Scotland from Ireland by missionary monks in the 6th century. In 1644, the first taxes were imposed on Scottish distillers by England, with the result that most of the nation’s whisky was soon distilled illicitly. With the Parliament’s passing of the “Excise Act” in 1824, licensing fees for distilleries were much cheaper. Distilleries started to take out licenses, and since then, the distillation industry in Scotland has been continuously expanding....
