Weninger Soproni Kékfrankos, Balf - 2020

750 mL
Item # 00112

Balf is a small village on the Lake Neusiedl. Working in the relatively cool climate of Sopron, Weninger has found the beauty and elegance of Kékfrankos that is often over-powered in the warmer Szekszard region. Kékfrankos, also known as Blaufränkisch in Austria, is grown just a stone's throw away from the border of Austria. In fact, Sopron was part of Austria in the early part of the 20th century and so the use of the grape today makes sense.

Staff Pick Notes

Winemaker Franz Weninger, family's winemaking roots trace back to the 1820s in Austria's Burgenland. Franz's father, Franz Sr., purchased the Balf vineyards near Sopron, Hungary, in 1997, reuniting the historic lands, once part of the same winemaking region before the modern border was drawn. Franz Jr. took charge of the operations in 2000. Today a prominent producer and a leading voice for biodynamic winemaking in both Burgenland and Sopron; The Hungarian Balf vineyard, situated on the southwestern tip of Lake Neusiedl, features schist soils distinct to the wine's character. Vinification employs a low-intervention philosophy: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts is followed by aging in large, neutral oak barrels. The resulting wine is an elegant expression of Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), precise, structured, and truly authentic.

More About This Wine

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.
