Sagrantino wines are known for their powerful structure however this bottling is different and although it's still rich and tannic shows a structure that is complemented with a fruit-driven profile. A more modern style of Sagrantino that will appeal to many.

Staff Pick Notes

Umbria, the region this wine is from, is the only centraI Italian region without access to the sea. It's typically a red wine region and its wines are traditionally full-bodied and concentrated. This wonderful wine is not an exception. Known for dark and dense red wines, Sagrantino is a grape unique to Umbria. The best examples come from the clay, sand, and limestone soils around the village of Montefalco. The wine must be made from 95% of the local Sagrantino grape and aged at least 37 months to give its rough edges time to soften. It is an intense wine with black fruit and herbal notes but at the same time it's not overwhelming. It's complex with a silky tannin but pleasant. I would pair it with red meat or red sauce primi piatti.

Sagrantino

One of Italy’s least-known noble grapes. Winemakers from the region of Umbria have worked to ensure that Sagrantino continues to be cultivated. The grape is made into the eponymous Sagrantino di Montefalco, as well as being a component of Rosso di Montefalco (the Rosso is mostly made up of Sangiovese, with Sagrantino adding depth and character). Sagrantino has the power and structure of the biggest wines in Italy, yet still shows opulent fruit redolent of mixed wild berries.
